The 6-week postpartum check up.

In western countries, the traditional ‘6 week check’ is a routine medical review of a mother and her baby 6 weeks after the birth.

In Australia, general practitioners (GP) perform the majority of postpartum assessments including a questionnaire, screening for bloods, look over c -sections or epsiotomy wounds, check in on baby’s progress and referrals to other health professionals if required.

A Child Health Nurse (CHN) will also be involved to track babies’ growth and development. This is also a good time to ask any questions you may have about your baby.

Alongside the above health professionals, I would also consider a women’s health physiotherapists (WHP), Naturopath and chiropractor/osteopath therapist for other postnatal complaints. A WHP is a fully qualified Physiotherapist who has also done extra study (Clinical Masters) to specialise in Women's Health.

A WHP can check the function of your pelvic floor and abdominals, address any problems with bladder and bowel control, return to exercise suggestions and go over any symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse. Depending on your labour and your recovery, your health professional team (OB, GP, CHN or midwife) may refer you to a WHP or you can self refer to one in private practice.

A Naturopath practitioner understands the demand of motherhood and can provide nutritional and herbal medicine support for birth recovery, additional pathology referrals to ensure optimal body function, individualised food ideas/meal plans and postnatal support for a wide range of problems experienced by baby and mums.

A chiropractor or osteopath can help mums find more optimal positions during the repetitive daily movements which will help lessen the stress on the neck and upper back. An alignment may also be indicated to help with this. Both these practitioners may also help baby with a gentle massage or alignment depending on the presenting concern.

As we know, pregnancy and birth places a huge demand both physically and mentally on the mother, so new mums need a lot of support and nurturing. Find a modality that resonates with your for the support you require to set you up for a happy and healthy 4th trimester period. ❤️
